Mothra (Larva, Showa) 1961

Mothra (Larva, Showa) 1961

1991 saw the release of yet another Mothra Larva, which bears some similarities to the 30th Anniversary Mothra, released in 1984. The design of the figure is the same, as is the scale (roughly a foot in length). However, there are enough differences that the two toys can readily be distinguished from one another. Firstly is the material the mold came from, as the Great Monster Series Larva was molded not in vinyl but in rubber; the '91 Larva is a hard vinyl. In addition, the 1991 molded figure is curved from head to tail, much like an 'S'. The 1984 Larva is a straight line from head to tail.

Yet another difference in the figures is the paint job. The more recent larva is deeper in tone, with dark shading across the head and siides of the body, while the '84 Mothra has a lighter color and is more uniform in tone throughout. Finally, The GMS Larva came in its box while the '91 release came with a tag picturing the kaiju on the front rearing up her head.
